Enable Android Apps on Chromebooks via Google Admin Console

This guide explains how administrators can enable Android apps on Chromebook devices through the Google Admin console. Once enabled, users can access the Managed Google Play Store and install Android apps — including the Cosafe app — directly on their Chromebooks.

Prerequisites

  • Admin access to the Google Admin console
  • Chrome devices managed under your Google Workspace organization

Steps

1. Open App & Extension Settings

In the Google Admin console, navigate to:

Devices > Chrome > Apps & extensions > User app settings

2. Select the Organizational Unit

Select the relevant Organizational Unit (OU) that contains the Chromebook users you want to configure.

3. Enable Android Apps

Find the Android apps on Chrome Devices setting and set it to Allow.

This enables access to the Managed Google Play Store for users in the selected OU.

4. Deploy the Cosafe App (Optional)

Once Android apps are enabled, you can push the Cosafe app to devices via the Managed Google Play Store directly from the Admin console:

  1. Go to Devices > Chrome > Apps & extensions
  2. Select your OU
  3. Click the + button and choose Add from Google Play
  4. Search for Cosafe and select it
  5. Set the installation policy to Force install to automatically deploy the app to all devices in the OU

Troubleshooting

  • Android apps option is greyed out: Your Chrome OS version may not support Android apps, or the feature may need to be enabled at the domain level first. Contact Google Workspace support for assistance.
  • App not appearing in Play Store: Ensure the Cosafe app is approved in your Managed Google Play Store. Go to Apps > Web and mobile apps in the Admin console to approve it.
  • App installs but notifications don't work: See the MDM and the Cosafe App guide for notification configuration on Chromebooks.
